Tom Petty - musician, rock star and songwriter - is an American music legend. He has been in the limelight for over 40 years and has penned many songs that will play forever on the classic rock playlist. Throughout the 80s and early 90s his music was unavoidable, and the Heartbreakers Greatest Hits is the perfect soundtrack for any long haul drive. Growing up in Florida and inspired by seeing the Beatles play the Ed Sullivan show, he formed a short lived band which attained local popularity before attempting to pursue a solo career. However, he soon reconvened some of the band members to form the nascent Heartbreakers line up. Their debut album achieved greater success in the UK than the states. It was with their third album ‘Damn the Torpedoes’ that they hit the big time, selling over 2 million copies. Throughout the 80s the band kept a high profile producing platinum albums such as ‘Hard Promises’ in 1981 and playing Live Aid in 1985; they also shared tours with Bob Dylan and The Grateful Dead. In the later 80’s Petty teamed up with Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne in the successful Travelling Wilburys. The super-group eventually produced 2 albums, one of which was released after Orbison’s death. In 1989 Tom Petty released his first solo album ‘Full Moon Fever’ which featured the hit singles ‘Free Fallin' and ‘I Won't Back Down’. In the ‘90s the Heartbreakers reformed periodically for touring; their ‘Greatest Hits’ went on to sell over 10 million copies. In 1994 Petty brought out his second solo album ‘Wildflowers’ which went on to sell over 3 million copies. The Heartbreakers have continued to tour and produce albums. In 1999 the band received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2002 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
